A blog for Catholic men that seeks to encourage virtue, the pursuit of holiness and the art of true masculinity.
In this episode of The Catholic Gentleman, Sam and John meet Kadesh Swanson, a Catholic artisan pipe maker, to discuss the joys of smoking a pipe and the benefits it has to our lives and souls. We go into the transcendentals inherently found in the craft of making high-quality pipes, as well as how fraternity, contemplation, and more can be found in smoking. Join us as we unpack the rich history of pipe smoking.
In this episode we discuss;
Kadesh J Swanson (pronounced Kuh-day-sh) was born and raised in the Pacific northwest. He has been a Catholic his whole life and a pipe maker for close to 8 years. He loves studying theology, and spending time with his family. When he is not in the shop making pipes he is usually at a farmers market making tacos for the locals.

I appreciate the whole theological explanation of pipe making and his story is inspiring indeed, but guys you should’ve smoked your pipes in the video! Kudos to Kadesh that he did! I think that pipe smoking is one of those things to have a unique, meaningful conversation. In those situations ,even if the smoke will take toil on your health, it’s worth it. By the way – I never heard of Chesterton smoking pipes. I think he was a cigar guy.

Hi Pablo, you are correct about Chesterton. The intent was that Chesterton smoked and had a balanced approach to smoking in general. Both Sam and I would have loved to smoke, however, being inside our offices where our equipment is made that a setting not conducive to smoking. I suppose we could have planned to be in a more appropriate setting, next time. Thanks for being with us, Pablo. God bless you and your pursuit of holiness! – John

Thank you for this episode.
Could you post some of your favorite tobaccos here in the comment section?
And which tobaccos would you suggest for a beginner?
