Episode 76: The Last Knight of Christendom

We are excited to be joined by an expert on Bl. Emperor Karl, David Ross, to help inform and instruct us on how we can learn from his holy life and Christ like example. Bl. Karl was elevated to the throne as Emperor of the Austrian Hungarian Empire in 1916 in the midst of the War to End All Wars, WWI. We discuss how he virtuously and heroically balanced his life as a Catholic Emperor, loving husband, and passionate father. He knew great suffering having been betrayed by his friend, forced into exile without his children, and ultimately dying at the young age of 35. He is a saint for modern men, join us.

  1. Fr Eric says

Catholic world, Christendom properly understood, ended with Protestant Reformation. Then, additional nails in the coffin were: Nationalism growing outside of Christendom, esp. England; exaltation of reason over and divorced from faith; French Revolution; unification of Italy and Germany; then World War I ended it all completely. The “isms” take over: Communism, Fascism, and Capitalism without a moral compass. WW I shows us the dark godless ways of the nation states in the late 19th Cent. The Hapsburgs had a tenuous hold over the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and it is difficult to see their rule hanging on. Yet, The dark aftermath of WW I is not just a changing of political models, it is the evil germination of the attack on any last remnant of a living Catholic Faith that has secular authority. Kulturkampf in Germany and Italy 1870 demonstrates this. The new powers wished for the total destruction of the past. The West, US Britain and France and others, saw the faith of Bl. Karl as an appendage they did not understand.

There is no doubt that Blessed Karl lived his vows as husband and paternal emperor. His feast day on the day of his marriage, (and the day before the feast of Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojytla), magnifies the importance that he is the model Catholic emperor and father.
