A blog for Catholic men that seeks to encourage virtue, the pursuit of holiness and the art of true masculinity.
We find ourselves in unprecedented times, where over 69% of Church going Catholics no longer believe in the unchanging dogma of Christ’s presence in the Eucharist. This is a grave problem that all men must ask themselves: Why? Fr. Donald Calloway joins John Heinen to discuss the reasons this has been an increasing problem over the last 50 years and the solutions. Reverence and love of Christ in the Eucharist is paramount to getting to heaven and there are actions that everyone can do now. In addition, we discuss his newest book on the Eucharist and the Mass that will help you be a better son or daughter of the Church. This is a great conversation with practical steps we can all use.

As always, Fr. Calloway’s ability to speak the truth is appreciated. I’m glad Father spoke about the role of altar servers and vocations to the priesthood. My son often wished our parish would at the very least provide a weekend when only boys could serve. He suggested it be a ‘vocations’ weekend, so that parents would not be offended. We need to stop giving ‘service hours’ for alter serving as this might be a way to re-focus this ministry toward nourishing vocations. I used to assist schedule servers and this is a real issue. They were only there for the easy service hours and had no real knowledge of how important their role is or what is even happening during Mass. I often saw disrespectful behavior at the altar. If boys were given an opportunity and taught by the clergy what this really means, you would see an increase in vocations.

I hope and pray that one day your son will get to serve with only males for Mass.
I belong to a Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter (FSSP) parish. Our altar servers are males of all ages (they must have had their First Holy Communion before serving). No females.
They undergo rigorous training for all the rubrics and protocols required for all the types of Masses offered at our parish. They serve every day of the week.
Seeing them do their duties in precision adds to the reverence of the Mass.
Our priests and men of the parish offer events during the year for the servers to be together outside of church to build up male comradery amongst themselves.
Encourage your son to approach the pastor with his request. I sincerely hope your husband will back up your son in this endeavor by telling the priest that he supports his son. Let the men work this out among themselves.
