Why “Holy” Men Make Lazy Husbands (A Father of 9 Explains)

August 19, 2026

A man decides he is serious about his faith, and somewhere along the way that becomes the reason he stops trying. His work is sloppy, his day is unstructured, and his wife carries the house while he tells himself he is just not attached to worldly things. He is not being humble, he’s using God as cover, and the men around him can see it even when he cannot.

Today we sit down with JJ Sanford, a father of nine and the president of the University of Dallas, to talk about the excuse Catholic men keep reaching for. We discuss why magnanimity and humility are sister virtues rather than opposites, why St. Joseph was not spending his Saturdays on the couch while Our Lady did the work, what it means to live your whole day as a prayer instead of fencing your faith into a morning offering and a Sunday Mass, and why outsourcing your thinking to a machine leaves you unable to answer the one question that actually matters: what is God calling you to do with what He gave you.
