A blog for Catholic men that seeks to encourage virtue, the pursuit of holiness and the art of true masculinity.
One warm summer night, I sat with a group of Catholic friends inside a local pub. The low light shone dimly on the wood paneled walls, the air thick with the roar of conversation. “A toast to the kingdom,” one of said as we clinked our frothy pint glasses, filled to the brim with various ales and porters. “And to our Lady,” another added enthusiastically.
For the next several hours, we laughed and argued, discussed and pondered. We talked about our jobs. Our families. Our dreams. And most of all, our faith.
As we left to go our separate ways, we parted as brothers—strengthened, encouraged, and proud to be Catholic.
There are few things as enjoyable or encouraging as this kind of faith-filled camaraderie with other Catholic men. Just being together, arguing about big ideas, smoking and drinking, having a good time—all unified in a common bond of faith.
Brotherhood. We need it. We thrive on it. And truth be told, most of us don’t have it.
I want to change that. Today, I am announcing a new society for men that seeks to provide the community and camaraderie. I’m calling it Fraternitas. I’m launching Fraternitas because now, more than ever, we need to be a unified in faith, a band of brothers marching shoulder to shoulder to the kingdom of heaven.
What is Fraternitas you ask? First and foremost, Fraternitas is a place exclusively for men. Here’s how it works:
There’s more, but I’ll be sharing more details as the date approaches.
I’m launching Fraternitas on June 27, the feast of Our Lady of Perpetual help. At the start, membership will be limited. Readers who are subscribed to my e-mail list will be given the first opportunity to sign up. That’s 2,203 of you.
If you haven’t registered for my e-mail list, sign up using the form below to make sure you’ll be eligible when registration opens.
Stay tuned. I look forward to sharing more about Fraternitas in the days ahead.

Will there be more “offline” stuff in this general genre? Especially for those men struggling with online pornography or other addictions, who have had to limit or eliminate their online access? They, even more than most, need this sort of support, but have an even harder time finding it.
Sam Guzman says
Yes, through the local chapters I hope to bring a strong local element to this.

In Britain, Australia, India and several other countries there is the Catenian Association. How will Fraternitas be different?

‘Murica ….nuff said.

I am part of an informal men’s group within our parish that has come together over the last few years for some similar reasons in your article.
I really like your idea of having mass intentions and hope you don’t mind my borrowing it?
Sam Guzman says
I have not trademarked Mass intentions. 🙂

I can completely relate to this. I go out for drinks with 4 of my brother knights after monthly K of C meetings. These informal outings have become something that I look forward to each month. We have drinks, talk about life, faith, etc. We solve the world’s problems. I strongly believe these outings and the fraternal connections they foster make me a better man.
Sam Guzman says
Exactly! This is what Fraternitas was designed to foster.
Mislav says
God bless you Sam! I am looking foward to Fraternitas… Just one question – Will there be a monthly fee of some kind that the members will have to pay or will the membership be free of charge?
Sam Guzman says
Yes, there will be a fee to join.

Will this one be somewhat similar to what the guys over at Whiskey Catholic are trying to do: http://www.whiskeycatholic.com/2015/02/21/call-for-whiskey-and-fraternity-groups/ ?
Sam Guzman says
Their idea sounds less formal and does not have the book club element. You will be able to find similarities between this and other organizations, but I haven’t found anyone doing anything that is exactly like Fraternitas.

Their site doesn’t allow for comments, which is unfortunate. Of course, when you allow for comments, you get some trolls, but still, it adds to the “fraternity” aspect of the site, and often the comments really develop any one topic to an appreciable degree.

This sounds great ! Don’t forget to include a component for and about pipe smoking. It is a great way to spend time with our brothers 🙂

I am jealous that I do not have that kind brotherhood group in real life ;( It is a great idea Sam! Catholic friends, good book, BIG problems and topics and good pub, beer (I am a homebrewer) and tobacco! I dream about that!
Greetings from Ireland!

Sam, our fledgling men’s group (the League of Ordinary Gentlemen) @ Bl John’s, the Ordinariate, Orange Co., Ca., will be breakfasting on Sat. the 13th. Fraternitas will be presented! Feel free to call through and I’ll put on you on speaker. 🙂

I’m very excited to see how this new fraternity progresses throughout the years. There is little doubt that it will be successful! Do you have a patron saint (or gentleman) in mind? It’s unfortunate that neither GK Chesterton nor Archbishop Fulton Sheen have been canonized, either one of these men would be perfect! Regardless, there are plenty of fine Catholic men to choose from if you choose to do so! I can’t wait to get a local chapter started in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
J Trumbo says
Good stuff. Can’t wait to see this develop!

What kind of lame ass shit is this? More ways to spend time away from fam?
